My Role:

I am one of two main programmers on the project with a focus on the development of the dialogue system and its interaction with the game environment, as well as hooking up game objects to their intended functions. The small size of our team, however, means that I often wear many hats and fill in where needed, whether that be assisting the other programmer in solving a specific problem, or communicating with the writers and artists to ensure their vision can be realistically implemented.

On this project I became fluent in Unity and GameMaker Studio, which required programming in C# and Java respectively.

Synopsis:

Writer’s Block is an atmospheric horror game developed by “Pixel My Heart” within GameMaker in the 2D, pixel-art style. It features a rich, in-depth story about a writer struggling to overcome his fears of failure and rejection in order to finally complete a work he can be proud of.

You play as a horror story writer attempting to finish his latest work and prepare for an upcoming book festival. The game takes place over the course of a week, beginning on a late Sunday night in a damp and dreary motel room. The book festival is the following Saturday, giving you one week to attempt resolve the many conflicts that plague the writer’s psyche. However, not all conflicts will have a swift and clean resolution, and choices will need to be made in order to make it to the end unscathed. Along the way, players will go up against the writer’s thoughts, memories, and psychological manifestations which take the form of monsters and disturbing imagery riddled throughout sets of horrifying and unsettling physical environments.

Technical Details:

Writer’s Block was first being developed within Unity 2D, however after various technical bugs and limitations were discovered, the “Pixel My Heart” team elected to move development onto GameMaker Studio, where an original demo was first developed to great success. The June 2018 demo, and perhaps future final release, will be developed entirely in GameMaker and will include the original work from the Unity build.

The “Pixel My Heart” Team:

This game is being developed by a core team of four individuals with various background specialties including programming, art, writing, and sound. During this development process, we’ve also enlisted the help of outside collaborators who have contributed to more specific aspects of the project.
